Barn Maxov, Czech Republic

Right after World War II, my father bought an old wooden house in the mountains of Jizera. It stands in the shade of a group of trees at the edge of a meadow, with a stream running below. There used to be a barn next to the chalet, but it has disappeared over time.

I decided to try an experiment. I bought unseasoned, unprocessed boards at the sawmill and laid them out where the old barn was, in the shape of the future barn. More or less in the profile of the chalet.

I wanted to test how it would look and make sure the neighbors wouldn’t be annoyed by the new building. And I also wanted to dry the wood.

So, I created a hollow pile in the shape of a house, which essentially copies the principle of a log cabin, only with planks. And because a pile of wood that dries out is not a building, I didn’t ask permission from the authorities. They were, shall we say, quite irritated by it.

It was important not to shorten the boards or treat them. We only built infill panels and tied everything together with wire rope – no nails or screws at all.

When people step inside, they see the world around them through a thick pattern of intersecting planks. It’s a kind of strange magic. I didn’t plan it – it just happened.
